"Unnatural tendencies" (2005) Video Projection. 32” loop

This film is projected from the ceiling onto the floor, it appears as a blue tinged pool of light.

The film unfolds a series of encounters between birds, who are alternatively guarding and pecking at fruit amid a hard frost.

Any narrative structure comes from the birds themselves; Visually the film explores their own relationships it could be seen as a metaphore to behaviour patterns in humans, as much as being a window onto a possibly more ‘natural’ existence.

The circle is devisive, it contains and centres the activity of the birds, it also alludes to a more ‘optically framed’ past world. The image could be described as poetic, an important element is the rhythm that the birds make on their own pathways and trajectories. The work explores issues of surveillance, mobility and relationships.

During the making of this film, I was acutely aware of increased military practice in the surrounding area, and of how my aural experience within the overgrown but nonetheless secure space of the garden, would be mirrored in other villages in other countries, where practice wasn’t an option and where boundaries, territories and security are highly contested and inflammatory.
