Welcome to my website
My work is situated in specific geographic sites, these are often rural spaces that seem dislocated from the present through a transformative historical event, my motivation is to explore through my video practice, the texture, rhythm and sonic nature of these discordant places, relocating them in time and space at installation.
Since May 2005 I have been making short video works as the practice base of Phd research (part-time) at Bath Spa University. My interest is in video installation that uses specific geographic site as subject, and to that end my practice has investigated specific ‘Landscapes of Defence‘.
The defence sites that I have been exploring are situated in the South West region of the U.K. They involve stop-lines, contested coastal sites and interior land sites on Salisbury plain.
The video works are influenced by ephilosophers, including Edward W. Soja and Yi Fu Tuan. Shooting experientially in the sites, amounts to a series of visual enquiries that ask how viewers synthesise notions of sight within the act/event of looking and may enter into an unanticipated dialogue with a compound ‘thirdspace’. Such a space has been described by Soja and stems from the work of Henri Lefebvre as a concept that comprehends the material and mental dimensions of space as a simultaneous event, which in effect creates a third space within which I aim to position my video works.
