"Pillbox" (2007) - Single
Projection, one pair of centrally located speakers
A split-screen single projection, the
right hand visual shows footage of a pillbox, situated at
the edge of the Kennet and Avon Canal. These structures
were built around 1943 to put political salve
on a disquieted nation, most of these interior defence lines
or ‘stop lines’ as they are known were never
put to use.
This is a type 22 pillbox. On the right
hand side, the camera is static, there is slight movement
to the right hand side of the frame, more movement comes
from the left hand visual, which uses archive footage of
trials held in ‘between wars’ to test the strength
of various designs for shelters. Within the work I am using
the archive footage to explore, in an understated way visual patterns and rhythms
that I saw within the site.
The sound is ambient and it reflects an often capricious experience of place.
The ambition of the work is to provoke the viewer into exploring an imaginative interior geography through the quiet almost poetic visual rhythms.
